The 2016 Māori All Blacks jersey was inspired by the natural elements of Aotearoa. Māori artist Dave Burke and Māori All Blacks kaumātua Luke Crawford worked together over 18 months on its design, which centres on Tangaroa and incorporates kōwhaiwhai patterns, ocean forms and a waka paddle. These elements represent movement, strength, determination, unity, whānau and shared purpose.

The 2016 Māori All Blacks northern-tour squad was captained by Hawke’s Bay hooker Ash Dixon and coached by Colin Cooper, with Tana Umaga serving as assistant coach and Carl Hoeft as set-piece coach. The squad included James Lowe, Akira Ioane, Brad Weber, Kane Hames, Otere Black, Tim Bateman, Matt Proctor, Tom Franklin and Shane Christie.

The three-match tour opened with a commanding 54–7 victory over the USA in Chicago on 4 November. The Māori All Blacks then faced Munster at Thomond Park on 11 November, where Munster won 27–14, before the tour concluded with a 26–10 victory over Harlequins at the Twickenham Stoop on 16 November.

The Munster match carried particular significance following the recent death of Munster legend and head coach Anthony Foley. Before the haka, Ash Dixon and his teammates placed a Māori All Blacks jersey bearing Foley’s initials on the halfway line. After performing the haka, Dixon presented the jersey to Foley’s two young sons.

The jersey remains a significant piece of Māori All Blacks history, connecting a culturally meaningful design with one of the team’s most memorable northern tours.
