Est. 1996

The Chiefs were established in 1996 as one of the original Super 12 franchises when professional rugby began in the Southern Hemisphere.

Originally known as the Waikato Chiefs, the franchise represented Waikato, North Harbour and Northland during its first three seasons.

In 1999, Super Rugby's regional boundaries were reorganised when North Harbour and Northland relocated to the Blues franchise. Then in 2013, Taranaki joined the Chiefs region, strengthening the franchise's reach across the central North Island.

Today, the Chiefs proudly represent six rugby unions, each contributing its own history, talent and passionate supporters.
